Déblo Duo

A job interview where the candidate answers in their own language

You run a restaurant in Lyon and the best candidate for the kitchen speaks Portuguese. You manage a farm in Andalusia and this season’s workers come from Morocco. You hire carers in Germany who come from Turkey. Many jobs do not need your language on day one, but the interview does. With Déblo Duo each of you speaks your own and hears the other in it.

A job interview

Why a translation app falls short in an interview

An interview lives on follow-up questions: why did you leave, what exactly did you do, when can you start. Typing every answer into an app makes the candidate sound poorer than they are, and asking a colleague to translate puts a third person in the room.

How it works

  1. Create the call or show the code

If the candidate is far away, choose “Remote” and send the link: they join from their browser. If they are in front of you, choose “Two phones” and they scan your QR code.

  2. Talk

You ask in your language, they hear the question in theirs and answer in theirs. You hear the answer in yours.

  3. Read the summary

After the call, open it in History: Duo writes a summary and keeps the full transcript. Share the summary with whoever decides with you.

For example

A restaurant owner in Lyon interviews a cook who lives in Porto. He asks in French about her last job; she answers in Portuguese and he hears French. After the call, the summary holds her experience, her notice period and the date she can start, ready to forward to his partner.

Questions

Should I tell the candidate that Duo is translating?

Yes, at the start. They hear a translated voice and will notice anyway. Also say that a transcript is kept, and why.

Can I use it inside Zoom or Teams?

No. The call runs inside Déblo Duo: the candidate joins with your link, in their browser.

Is it fair if the job requires my language?

If the job really needs the language, test it directly, in that language. Duo is for jobs where the language is not the skill you are hiring for: it lets you judge the person on everything else.
