Déblo Duo

Explain what hurts, in your language, to a doctor who speaks another

Your child has a fever in Lisbon, you twisted an ankle in Seoul, your father needs a prescription renewed in Istanbul. The staff want to help, but you share no language. With Déblo Duo you describe the symptoms in your own words and they hear them in theirs.

At the hospital abroad

Why gestures and a phrasebook are not enough

Pointing at your head works for a headache. It does not work for “since yesterday evening”, “he is allergic to penicillin” or “she already took paracetamol two hours ago”. These are the details a doctor needs first, and the ones no phrasebook has.

How it works

  1. Prepare before you go in

Have the names of any medicines and allergies written down, so you can read them out. In Duo, choose “One phone”, your language and the language of the country.

  2. Put the phone between you

At the desk or in the consulting room, the screen splits in two. The top half is turned towards the nurse or doctor, with the instructions in their language.

  3. Speak in turn

Hold your half and explain what is happening. The translation plays out loud. The doctor answers the same way, and you hear the question in your language.

For example

In an emergency room in Porto, a father from Lyon explains in French that his six-year-old daughter has had a fever since last night and has already had a dose of paracetamol. The nurse hears Portuguese, asks how much and at what time, and he hears the question in French.

Questions

Can Duo replace a medical interpreter?

No. Duo helps you explain and understand. For a diagnosis, consent to an operation, a treatment plan or any decision where a single word matters, ask the hospital for a professional interpreter.

What should I do in an emergency?

Call the local emergency number first. Duo is for the conversation that follows, at the desk or with the doctor, not for raising the alarm.

Does it work without internet?

No. The translation runs live and needs mobile data or Wi-Fi. If your plan does not work abroad, ask whether the hospital has Wi-Fi for visitors.
